The module European studies on deviance and social control is the first of its kind for Greek Universities and social sciences’ students of the University of the Aegean. Although criminology as an interdisciplinary study emerged in Europe, remains uncharted, and is dominated by the literature emanating from United States. The module’s basic objective is students’ familiarization with the emergence, reshaping and the future of an integrated and multidisciplinary European critical thought on deviance and social control. At the end of this module students should be able to discuss and apply concepts and to approach with adequate understanding issues concerning human rights, penal reform, a just society, social control, welfare state, politics of law and order, community safety, social justice, administrative criminal policy and EU as a criminal policy actor, thus reinforcing a sense of European citizenship based on understanding and respect for human rights and democracy, tolerance and respect to other cultures. Students are encouraged to actively participate through presentations (open to audience from civil society), research using innovative products and processes and to deliver (each) an original research study based on their presentations and research, which will be uploaded to the database enforcing visibility of the Teaching module to all students in University of the Aegean (from different disciplines), as well as students from others countries (EU and non EU) visiting University of the Aegean as Erasmus students. Website will also enforce visibility of this European integration scientific resource to civil society in an EU region and borders (Lesvos, North Aegean) with serious development problems, trying in that way to contribute to the solution of the aforementioned development problems through dialogue, active European citizenship and personal fulfilment and exchanging good practice. Database will be a way for the student to participate in an scientific dialogue, exchange ideas, stimulating knowledge on European studies on deviance and social control, and a base to develop further this knowledge by using their work for future participations in conferences and postgraduate or/and doctoral thesis.
