The heyday of European critical study on deviance and social control and
European penal reform movements
Description
The basic objective of this course is studentsʼ familiarization with the
modern European critical thought on deviance and social control- New
Criminology. At the same time, the course aims at the understanding of
its pivotal questions and at explaining in their socio-political
settings. The first 3 hours of the course will be a Professorʼs
presentation to the student audience and the other 9 hours will be
studentsʼ presentations on European case studies (especially in Britain,
Italy, Germany, France, Belgium, The Nederlands and Spain) where the New
Criminology was the most influential, demonstrating how comparative
criminological problems received different responses because scholars
reflected upon different socio-political realities. Students are
encouraged to use new technology and the web as methods of their
research and presentation.
Impact
At the end of this course student should be able to discuss and apply
concepts concerning the establishment of a New European criminological
perspective and to approach with adequate understanding issues
concerning social control, welfare state, politics of law and order.
This learning outcome will be evaluated through a presentation to an
open audience which will have the opportunity to place questions and
participate actively.
