The roots of European critical study on deviance and social control: The
European Modern School of integrated penal sciences
Description
The basic objective of this course is studentsʼ familiarization with the
roots of European critical thought on deviance and social control. At
the same time, the course aims at the understanding of its pivotal
questions and at explaining in their socio-political settings. The first
3 hours of the course will be a Professorʼs presentation to the student
audience and the other 9 hours will be studentsʼ presentations on
European case studies (especially in Italy, Germany, France, Belgium and
The Nederlands) where the Modern School was the most influential.
Students are encouraged to use new technology and the web as methods of
their research and presentation.
Impact
At the end of this course student should be able to discuss and apply
concepts concerning the birth of a European criminological perspective
and to approach with adequate understanding issues concerning human
rights, penal reform and a just society. This learning outcome will be
evaluated through a presentation to an open audience which will have the
opportunity to place questions and participate actively
